Project description:
From the José Garnica Salazarde Public School from Alcalá la Real(Jaén) they are committed to a school for EVERYONE, regardless of language, ability, condition … for which they have decided to create an ACCESSIBLE SCHOOL for all people.
To achieve this objective, the Center’s Guidance Team has sensitized the educational community with a proposal of activities both at the center level, as well as by cycles and levels.
The activities proposed by levels and cycles have consisted of awareness activities. Through them, it has been intended that students can experience the difficulties encountered on a daily basis by any person with sensory, physical or intellectual disability and value the great effort they make to do any activity of daily life.
The activities proposed at the center level have been aimed at building an educational center accessible at a sensory, physical and cognitive level.
With regard to sensory accessibility, tennis balls have been placed on the legs of the chairs and tables to soundproof the classroom furniture. With this measure we intend to reduce the noise level in classrooms, as this directly affects the concentration and attention of all children in general. To this end, they have requested collaboration from the local Department of Sports, Youth and Education and different tennis and paddle clubs to provide them with balls that they will not use. In this way, they also contribute to the reuse of disused materialand collaborate in the maintenance of the environment.
Regarding physical accessibility, the center has ramps and a lift so that people with reduced mobility, the elderly or families with pushchairs can go upstairs.
And with regard to cognitive accessibility, the different premises of the schoolhave been marked with ARASAACpictograms: offices, classes, dining room, toilets, etc.
With this measure, they want to contribute to the exercise of the universal right of people (with or without disabilities) to easily access and understand environments.
The project is still open and in continuous growth, since they intend to continue to pictograph the premises of the center by explaining what is done in each room, making the daily menu of the dining room with pictograms, etc., among other activities to be carried out.
On the other hand, they have organized a talk to inform, sensitize and share opinionswith some representatives of other schools and institutes, associations, the councilor for Social Services and the councilor for Education, as well as the local press and the province of Jaén and the radio. In it, the different actions that we had carried out in the center were exposed and they were encouraged to follow in their footsteps with this inclusive practice so that Alcalá la Real not only has an accessible school, but also that Alcalá is an ACCESSIBLE LOCALITY.
From ARASAAC, we convey our congratulations to all the people and institutions involved for facilitating communication and cognitive accessibility for all people and in all contexts and we encourage them to continue extending their great work to all of society. Of course, you have our full support.
